The combat is exciting. The character models are AWESOME. The flying skills? It's too fucking good to be true, but it's true. I don't care. I want this game in the west, NOW!!!

This game is deeply rooted in Chinese martial art culture. Western fantasy nowadays is just too overused. However, for anyone who enjoys intense PVP, appreciates eastern/different culture in a beautiful next gen setting, and got sick of the dragon demon overkill from other MMO games, then this game is for you. If you are relatively closed-minded cultural wise, this game is not for you

It is this good. I think you guys will like it when it eventually comes to the West. It's not the type of grindy Korean MMO. You don't need to grind mobs, but you do need to keep doing dailies for incremental progress every day, which is my biggest gripe with this game.

Moonlight Blade is a mixed bag. On the one hand, there are some genuine innovations not seen in western MMOs. But those little innovations sometimes become the very monotonous stuff that are constantly vying for your attention. Tencent crafted a beautiful world that's only fun for a week. Once you're fed up with the breathtaking sceneries, all that is left of this game is repetitiveness and nothing interesting to do.

The graphics of this game are even better than Black Desert Online. While BDO does indeed has great graphics, you won't be awed by it and you certainly won't pause just to admire the great scenary like I do with Moonlight Blade. In my opinion, they have done a great job building this world. There are a ton of exploration quests that grant you something special just for visiting the vistas of the world.

The profession system is interesting and not like anything you've seen in a western MMO. Grouping is pretty much essential in Moonlight Blade, which makes non-Chinese speaker's life miserable.

I can't wait till this game comes out in the west so I can truly experience what Moonlight Blade has to offer.

Lets start, Moonlight Blade is mmo in wuxia theme based on Gu Long’s novels with 4 factions.

First like in most mmos we have to create character, chose clan in which we want to be and play plastic surgeon with face.

|
|

As for now we have 8 clans

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjrHjYxJ1KQ

 7th clan https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pp6SjlRfCzE

8th  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqNc13BfnCg,

I’ve tested all and I think all are good all have counters knocking up/down etc, it will depends from player taste which they will like more, easiest to play is healing one, hardest tangmen.

Zhenwu is best countering clan, who can fight alongside own shadow.

Wudu (5venom) fun to play but more for 1v1, by many considered as assassin clan with invisibility skill.

TIanxiang (umbrella) healer, best aoes, with 2 modes, 1st normal with 1 heal skill and 1 OT heal, 2nd neglecting around 80% of dmg with only 2 offensive skills. At first I didn’t rly like this one especially that right click skill frontal square AOE have 8 or 10s CD, but while looking at videos saw one player using that skill many times, later found out that meridian skill allow us to use it 6 times if we click fast without waiting for CD. Easiest to play.

Tangmen kiting clan with puppet, male for female char and female for male. Only clan without action mode maybe I would like it more other way. Similar to puppet characters in ninja storm, that’s why hardest to master from all 8.

Shenwu (8th clan based on Fu Hongxue) supposed to be blade clan using hawk/eagle(in some articles they call it hawk in others eagle) but it look more like katana… , still developing this char so cant say much but seems it will be fun to play, a bit similar to Taibai but this one seems more fun to me.

Shenwei (“tank”) using spear and bow, they have one of most annoying skills in game, decrease own hp to 1% and for 30s you are immortal and immune to all CC skills in game.

Beggar (KF master from B&S ) drunken master, players who like KF master in B&S will like it as its almost copy of it, by spitting on opponents they remove their parry energy.

Taibai (flashsword) kinda samurai class, look a bit like Wutang. DPS clan, if you will get caught in their combo you may be in big trouble, few friends have problem with fighting them and ask for advices, from my experience 99% of Taibai I’ve duelled are easiest clan to win against.

Each one of them have few skills that require target usually skills that can be used only against 1 opponent,  and few that don’t  most time small frontal or 360 degrees aoe, 1 or 2 skills that can be used on opponent in air and finisher skill that will renew your hp. There is unique skill compared to other mmos where you “teleport” yourself and opponent or mob (wont work on instance/world bosses) to other “dimension” for few seconds, so others wont interfere, good for pking:P Basically world will turn black and white while you and your target can see only each other, for players outside you will be visible but no one can help or disturb in that fight.

Assassin job have similar skill though it can be used on mobs and your target without activating aggro.

When we start I suggest to change gameplay settings, unless someone like to play point and click, we have 3 options:

-traditional point and click with RMB for camera

-2nd mode difference is that we move camera by moving mouse no need to hold RMB

-3rd action (like in other mmos) where we can put skills as LMB and RMB, usually most basic skill which we can spam will be set as LMB and 2nd skill as RMB- Once again only TANG cant use this one

|

At 16 lvl automatically we will unlock meridian system, including few meridian trees, 2nd is after 30lvl which will allow us to specialize skills in similar way to B&S, some will change animation, each skill have 3 options which we can change for free any time outside of combat for example one of my single target skills can deal small aoe dmg, deal 6 instead of 5 hits or give debuff , but first we need to duel npc to unlock them. Only thing I don’t like about combat here is that parry is automatic, and game will turn it on for us and AI as long as we have parry energy, other than that I really enjoy combat here, to have better idea how it is check few fights  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZbmuMCkyMFc

I think it was 33lvl when we chose 1st job/profession, join faction and unlock 3 of 4 daily quests for exp and other rewards. Not sure if it was 33 or 35 when we unlock special “books” called mantra.

|

Jobs/professions

A bit different from other mmos, each can craft few things, for example treasure hunter can craft shirts and secondary weapons, musician can craft clothes etc.

Lets get to interesting part. You can have 3 jobs, each next require more experience points for unlocking skills, passive and active. Each have passives for diff stats, each have array skill players who have played 12sky  and Age of Wulin/Wushu will feel familiar with this system.

One of daily quests we unlock at 33 is connected to few jobs, team of 5 is required and leader need to have right profession.

Treasure hunter will take team to check specified area and look for treasure.

Captor/guard have to kill criminals (mobs and their boss) guard escort of criminals from their friends, and capture bosses.

Escort have to… escort! Goods from point A to B and defend from mobs if unlucky.

Each job is connected to small events.

Treasure hunter can make team and check special zones for treasure like during daily, difference is this can happen few times a day and you need special item to participate, which you can buy from npc or get from doing jobs vents as part of reward.

More often treasure hunters look for treasures solo, which require shovel and jade that help with localization of chest/chests, both items can be purchased from npc, shovels can be acquired from jobs events  /can be done 30 times a day.

Captor have to catch bosses, to start need token from npc or events. If I good remember can be done 5 times a day.

Escort similar to silkroad, can start 2 kinds of escort. One where reward will be bound gold and mobs can attack escort. Second with unbound gold as reward but in this case players will try to rob us. Both can be done 15 times a day, each require diff item to start, from npc or reward from other jobs events.

Assassin is bounty hunter, can either talk with npc and go kill boss or go to board with bounties and take request for some player. I know that players can put bounty on pkers, no idea if that work, but in past I’ve read that sometimes npc will put bounty if witness PKing.

Hunter can capture animals and use or sell as pets, or he/she may… HUNT! For skins/fur. Only hunter can feed pets, players without this job have to go to npc or use player who is hunter for feeding. Other unique feature of hunter is breeding, and getting better quality pet.

Musician/painter at early version only female characters could become musicians and male painters, later they changed and now its same job, there is small difference, female play on zither and male on flute +their music give different buffs. My favourite feature of female musician is option to craft disguise items, depends from  skill lvl will change nick, or nick and armor, in past devs were saying that on max lvl will change gender but never saw that, some players may say its not needed and will get boring fast, but if you change nick before pking or robbing other player escort… ^_^

What I like in musician job in MB is that you play buff music and you will have it for 20-30 min not like in Age of Wulin where it have to be played all time, unless its healing music. As for painting, players have to go to various places on each map find certain items/spots and then they will make painting which will give us meridian points and stats permanently.

I am writing all this from memory, I don’t remember all but, at faction war each job can use special skills.

Assassin at max lvl can make his team invisible for 5 min, good to reach strategic point or just go behind enemy lines.

Normally pets are just companions who run behind us and if we want can pick up loot, but on war hunter is more like summoner who fight with pets and while non hunters can have only 1 pet spawned at time, hunter can run with 4!

They added 2 jobs, some war advisor?? can build structures and war machines, and market/logistic specialist for making trade routes and opening stalls. In future they plan to increase amount of jobs at some websites they say 12 other 18 hard to say atm.

|

We have 4 factions Yellow, Red, White and Blue, only difference is fashions colour and main base location.

Only players in same faction can be in guild, if guild leader change faction everyone in guild will change faction also, if someone don’t want to change have to quit guild earlier.

|

We have 4 daily quests to help you lvl up (4th one is unlocked at 40lvl) each can max stack 3 times.

-Meditation, just sitting and chilling with others, the more players in team the faster it will go.

-Mob killing, at high lvls will take time to solo, better to do in team.

-Job daily, either treasure (require 5 ppl), escort or  catching/killing criminals. Escort and catching above 65 will be harder and better to do in team, on hi lvls you will fail solo.

-Additional exp, by doing job related stuff, challenge tower, guild defense, instances, duelling, faction daily, faction war.

|
|

Character development

This is quest based game, grinding wont give you anything. Most time we will lvl o main story quests, every few lvls it will stop and then we have to do daily quests.

While lvling we will get more and more skills, and higher lvls for skills you already have. Later you can start “lvling” meridian trees, there are 7 at the moment, maybe more in future. Six of these is same for everyone and increase stats, 2nd tree is for skills and each clan have diff corresponding to their skills. In each of 6 trees there are 3 slots for meridians gems, each is different category and in each of them we have 3 kinds.

Then we have 38 special books which lvling is similar to meridians, some are sets of 3 or 4 (which is max active number). Each mantra will give diff amount of stats, each have own skills most are active, few have active and passive skill, and small amount that have only passive skill. Active skills will use rage/ultimate energy.

|

At end game we had 1 armor set per clan.

From 8th clan update equipment system changed, we have PvE (3 diff sets which we can partialy mix) and PVP sets. While crafting gear they can get bonus stats depends from job lvl, later we can move them to other item from same category, for example from sword to shirt wont work.

|

Like in most games we have different quality of armors/weapons, pets and meridian gems.

White is lowest, then green, blue, purple with yellow as strongest.

|

Guilds have passive skills, which you buy for bound gold and meridian exp, diff to other games some skills will stay with you ever if you quit guild, which I thnk is good.

|
|

Fashions

Game have many fashions, we can also change any armor into fashion, there are few fashions in cash shop, later after few updates we got dye system for most expensive fashions, most fashions come from playing game, even for login game send us fashions from time to time in certain order.

|
|

Housing

First you have to bid on land, if you win and have mats can start building, later put in furnitures, best to do it according to feng shui rules, some furnitures will give buff. Not ver common in mmos with housing feature we can give friend “key” to our house. earlier players could visit your home and you would receive exp while they get meridian exp+box which if lucky may contain furniture.

|
|

Graphic

Most of players who are interested in this game already know how it look, rest may check here small example  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jwHVZ6QGaRA , its not just filters and textures but also great weather effects, I remember and regret that I didn’t record storm at tianxiang map during which sun came out from behind clouds, that was best effect I saw in any mmo, maybe even any game, also waves during storm are nice but on bad side we cant run on water then. While some look rly nice I hate when I don’t have much time and there is sandstorm or fog when I want to hunt.

|
|

Cash shop

We have different currencies, 1st cash shop gold like in most F2P mmos that we buy with real money, 2nd coupons we receive for purchasing 1st currency, 3rd game coupons acquired in game by doing storyline quests, sometimes from daily login and other small events.

Nothing special, nothing game breaking, mostly fashions, mounts and fling skill, pets, tokens for few daily, VIP which give small boost to stats, after 1 week of playing game I had enough coupons to buy 3 months VIP, although from time to time they turn this option off.

|
|

||PvE||

Adventures, side quests which will give us meridian exp some give fashion, usually chained quests sometimes just small chat with npc unlocking other adventure.

|

Challenge tower, unlocked at 50lvl (if I remember correct), its simplified mushin tower from B&S, as you don’t hav to run everything happen at one level.

You can participate once a day, if you lose or go out on your own cant go back till next day. There is limit of  50 battles a week every 5 fights you have to kill mobs.

Depends from your lvl you will receive one of 3 tokens which you can exchange for mantra pages, gems, mats, fashion, pets, horse, saddle.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T9pUlwy2jcM

Tianxiang healing energy wont refresh here, cant use potions, healing skills from mantra work.

After winning battle you will get tokens to exchange for, and can pick one of 3 reward cards, gold, meridian points, mats, def buff, or buff that will let you use finisher.

|

Hunting and catching pets, hunting will give mats, tokens for other jobs, mantra pages, gems.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUHsEon_YqQ

|

Assassination, killing bosses will give mats bound gold, mantra pages, gems, tokens for jobs.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rkKVeKQduCg

|

Escort max 5 players, give bound gold.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-O0UVNw8csE

|

Treasure hunting, have to be aware of other players as they may try to PK and steal your chest. While digging boss may jump from nowhere, there are 2 types, they have diff skills, diff play style and slightly diff drop.

Second treasure hunting require 5 players, both give mats, mantra pages, gems, tokens for other jobs, this one sometimes give fashion.

|

Duels with npc, first we have to beat npc on easy mode then we can start hard. Very important to do as some of them unlock meridians for skills, other rewards are meridian exp and pills increasing stats permanently.

|

Farming world bosses for mats fashions, gear, mantra pages, gems, potions, meridian points.

|

Fishing, we can go and sell fishes to npc or go to other npc and exchange for rewards even furnitures.

Diving for treasures.

|

Guild defense at Saturday, putting of fire, killing mobs and 3 bosses. Will give guild points, faction rep and exp.

|

Raiding npc escorts at weekend for bound gold.

|

“barn defense”?? mini instance where you have to defend barn from waves of mobs, can participate 3 times, only at sunday.  I think it opens at 80lvl, reward are 6th lvl crystals for upgrading items.

|

Instances

Require team to enter, one of reasons why some players make alts (some make musician to give buff themselves), most instances have 2 modes normal and hard require diff lvl to enter and have slightly diff mechanics some bosses will have additional skills and are for max 5 players, all drop mats, gear, gems, mantra pages if lucky whole book, fashion, special certificates to exchange with npc for ingredients to craft best gear. With 8th clan update instead of dropping 1 mantra page per run you get 3, even lower lvl yellow quality gear drop, instances give coins and tokens for exchanging  with npc for PvE gear and other items.

There is one instance that require 10 players to start, and there is one special instance for 2 players only which is more like assassination tutorial from which you can get assassin fashion, from 8th clan update you will get whole set in just 1 run.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-2n-d6WCSo

|
|

||PVP||

Duels depends from lvl we will get differen tokens there are 3 types, we can exchange them for mantra pages, gems, fashion, mats, pets, saddle.

From 8th clan update we will also receive special tokens to exchange for gear.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kx9nl9f3K0Y

|

Escort for unbound gold, you can either make one or raid other players.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2EXVjeUkRw

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bX_q5WDfw5M

Saturday escort for 12 players, big amount of unbound gold.  Can be raided by others.

|

5v5 and 15v15 I think no need explanation.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0s_58RpGpEI

|

PKing without reason at wrong place will sooner or later will end at jail, minimum time 3h (if it wasn’t changed) players with captor job pay smaller bribes for decreasing time. Other than is some mmos when you log off time will stop going, so you have to stay 3h online, probably that’s why players don’t pk wherever they want.

|

Factions

All of these give faction reputation.

Daily quest, can be stacked for 3 days. Either we need to protect npc for 8 min from opposite faction players or we will have to kill npc of other faction, if we don’t want to do this we can go and kill 15 players of other faction, 8th clan update changed this to 10.  Rewards are mats, crystals for upgrading gear, exp, meridian exp, bound gold.

Faction war is divided in 2 parts, one where we gather chests and fight a bit, and one where we only fight, this way even players who don’t like pvp can be help to faction. Reward will give guild points, faction tokens depends from lvl, mats, chance for purple gems and pages for one of best mantra, later update will change this to page which we can exchange for mantra page we like.

At sunday there are special faction escorts which will give bound gold, either you will be escorting or raiding other faction.

Each map have 2 bases over which factions can fight, later build structures, if you kill players of other faction on your territory you wont get pk points, if they will kill they will get and if it work like devs were saying if npc from your faction see it will add them on criminals list.

For faction tokens we can get mantra pages, gems, mats, saddle, faction fashion, fashion.

From 8th clan update we will also receive special tokens to exchange for gear.

|
|
|

In less than 2 months from now there will be another update, in past they were saying it will bring raid boss, now seems it will be instance.

There will be special instance for 120-150 players to compete, my guess is it will be battlefield like in Hotk which was fun, a bit similar to MOBA games, map with 2 camps on opposite end of map with mobs, where to win we had to kill other side general.

New Best gear and probably some more stuff.

Dave Blank Omg you've updated your post.

Dave Blank I have to say I have not begun to scratch the surface, but sadly this game is simply too unfriendly and there are too many hoops to go through before it becomes enjoyable. All in all, good and innovative designs can be found here, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired.

raz dwa now its complete, probably i forgot about some stuffs and maybe need to find some more stuffs in newest update.

Paul Nebuchadnezzar Nice writeup! I would suggest you make a new post next time since an old post has no chance to appear on the front page thus reaching fewer people.

Paul Nebuchadnezzar It's okay to do post an updated review with a new score. As far as I know, it will overwrite the old score you've given.

Okay, so after trying out the "Ranger" identity and being locked out of performing the basic "treasure-hunting" because I need to use some bullshit currency to buy the one-time use shovel, I've finally decided this game isn't for me. This is but one example of the bullshit that this game pulls off. I should have been cautious when it comes to Tencent. This is a company that will absolutely screw up a good game and fuck the players in the ass with the retarded way they run the game.

As of today, I'm still level 66 and I can only wait till the next day to do the AFK leveling and two other boring daily missions which give exp. I'd be alright if I can solo those dailies, but it appears I'm forced to group up to do those afk escort and arrest missions. As a lonewolf type of MMO player, being forced to group up is extremely annoying.

The story mission will only unlock after 70, so judging from the amount of exp I got in the last 2 days, I can expect to reach level 70 next monday. Keep in mind that I'm not even at max level. The amount of boring shit the game makes you do is unreal and unprecedented in any MMO I've played. I think this is an attempt to masquerade the lack of meaningful content. Whoever came up with the design of these stupid missions need to be fired and banished from making games again.

It's a pity because the game could have been something special. The game world is breathtaking, the fashion design is the best I've ever seen in an Asian-themed MMO and the graphics are icing on the cake. As much as I want to continue my journey as a wandering/flying swordwoman who wears no undies, I cannot take anymore of Tencent's shit after merely less than a week into it.

Peace. Game uninstalled.

Robocap 143 I have never heard of this game until now. I'm one of those guys who like to mind my own business unless I'm ready to go into an instance. It's made easy now with LFG matching so I don't see why I shouldn't group up despite my social anxiety disorder.

Robocap 143 I was talking about WoW's LFG matching, but most MMOs have them nowadays.

Dave Blank I would say being able to play solo is very important to me as an MMO player. I know it sounds weird, but I played BnS and Tera entirely solo. I like the option and added incentives to group up, but being forced to group up for something like an escort afk daily is pure nonsense. It's the opposite of fun. Nevertheless, it's relatively easy to find a group so far, but I can't begin to imagine how hard it is to do anything in this game once the game becomes deserted enough.

Dave Blank The mob killing daily is quick, but again, it's not fun. It's boring and I bet most people would agree with me. People do it simply because of the reward. It's one of the daily chores you have to endure in order to get your candies. The candies are the treat. They should make more of the candies instead of making us go through hoops to get them.

Arl Williams Sounds like a horrible game. Please don't port it over!

Review MMO.

First off, the graphics. Oh-my-god, is it one of the best looking MMOs out there. They have crafted an amazingly detailed, realistic and not to mention a huge world for players to explore. This, in my opinion, is the biggest plus of the game. Not only is the world huge, but it is also beautiful. I find myself often climbing the tallest peak just to admire the landscape down low. If this is what ancient China looked like, I'd want to go back and live there.

But while the world looks nice, it is not a vibrant world, for most of it are sparsely populated. NPCs are few and far between, and when they appear they just stand there doing nothing. The city of Hangzhou looks impressive in scale, but there are only about fifty people living inside, and almost all of the buildings you can walk inside are empty and lifeless. Exploration is pretty much moot in this game once you've had enough of sight-seeing.

There is hardly any depth to the combat in this game. Classes have no specialization, meaning that every single class has one playstyle and live by the same rotations. By the 10th hour, you will have discovered all the core skills. Generally, combat goes like this. You have to use a certain skills to drain the white bar of your enemy. Once their white bar is depleted, you then go crazy on DPS skills and take down his hp until his white bar regenerates. Rinse and repeat. Throw in some CC and CC breaks and this is basically it. PVP revolves around effective use of CC and CC breaks, mobility and burst rotation, while PVE doesn't get as much developer attention in this game.

As much as it feels good to fly around or simply gallop around ancient China in this game, I can't really justify spending money or sinking more time into it because of the pay-to-win mechanics. For example, paid members get a 2% to-hit, 2% block chance and some % of hp boost to start with, so if you're free-to-play, no serious players will group with you because you're inherently weaker. Some content I consider essential to the experience, like the class-specific flying skills, are gated behind the in-game store. Moreover, the fact that players can bid on equipment in dungeons using store credits turned me away from the game further.

I have spent only two days playing Moonlight Blade, so I could be wrong about some of the things I said. Nevertheless, two days are enough for me to decide how it would be a waste of my limited free time playing a "free-to-play" game that disrespects my efforts.

Pros

  • World is breathtaking. Amazingly detailed and picturesque.
  • Characters look great. Awesome facial customization.
  • There is a story and it is all right if you can read Chinese.
  • Classes are different
  • Combat is simple yet satisfying
  • Cons

  • Combat lacks depth. No specialization within the same classes
  • World is an empty sandbox devoid of life.
  • Unskippable cutscenes.
  • Glitches on occasion. Transition into story mode is abrupt. Not very polished overall.
  • Pay-to-win
  • No dungeon-finder. You have to yell in the LFG channel to get a group.

Dave Blank @Anonymous To answer ur question, anon, I've noticed botting behaviors. A train of players running in the same direction one after another. Definitely are bots if you ask me.

Dave Blank Any popular MMO will have bots nowadays. It's almost impossible to prevent, but the botting in BnS takes cheating to a whole new level.

Dave Blank I've uninstalled the game. Peace.

The graphics are fantastic, but the business model, the combat and content are actually not that good, especially when compared to games like Blade & Soul. The world is breathtaking, but at the same time it feels empty. The combat doesn't even feel very good by Tera's standard.

    on June 28, 2016

Dave Blank Tera's combat blows this game out of the water, much less Blade & Soul. Nevertheless, MLB's world is beautiful, historically rich and huge, which is not something that either game has.
